For addiction in general, most specialists believe that until an addict admits they have a problem very little can be done for them. So addiction may be thought of as a condition that requires a self-diagnosis, at least for the person to begin to recover.

One common method used by many traditional twelve-step programs is some variations of the 20 Questions, first conceived by Dr. Robert Seligman of Johns Hopkins University in the 1930’s. The idea was that if the person answered one question “yes”, this was a warning that they may be an alcoholic. If they answered two in the affirmative, there was a good chance they were an alcoholic; moreover, if they answered three or more positively, they were categorized as an alcoholic.

A pamphlet actually published by Alcoholics Anonymous in 1956 titled, Is AA for You? Twelve Questions Only You Can Answer asked twelve questions about the potential alcoholic.

A similar set of questions exists for most traditional twelve-step programs. Narcotics Anonymous has a twenty-five questions method. Gamblers Anonymous uses a twenty questions approach.
